CAPSTONE PROJECT

Engl 400: Angels and Devils

Hello: welcome to my English Capstone Project for the English 400 class on Angels and Devils. For my project, I looked at The Screwtape Letters, written by C. S. Lewis. It is a humorous book that is written from the point of view of Screwtape, a senior devil, instructing his nephew, Wormwood, on how to successfully tempt a human to Hell's side. Devils in this text are described as logically scheming to tempt souls to sin. It reads as if Screwtape is a teacher of scholarly information who is instructing a pupil on the steps that should be taken depending on what situation he is in. The text is full of irony which can cause people to simply laugh and move on with their lives, or laugh because of the hypocrisy it shows in Christianity.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

My project is made like a book club. First, I have listed the main points from each chapter and Screwtape's toast at the end of the book. I then go on to explain some of the important themes from the text. I also have a section on how this text and its descriptions of devils connects to some of the texts we read in class. I have a conclusion in which I also share my thoughts on the book. I end with citations. My hope is that his book club site could help groups of people reading the text to understand what is happening and get an idea of some of the important themes and ideas to pick up on. I also hope that those people look deeper at this text to see that it is not simply a Christian text, but one that easily shows the hypocrisy in Christianity.
